This page is about the 1967 Mk3 Midget GAN4 55879, as a Lenham LeMans Coupe.
The Lenham body was imported into Australia by Ray English (R.J. English Sports Car Improvements). It was bought from him by Alex Robertson in the late 1970's. Alex fitted the body to a Mk3 Midget(GAN4 55879). He also fitted a fibreglass one-piece bonnet that appears to be a modification on the W&P Sebring bonnet, with the addition of rubber bumper type mouldings.
Alex built the car as a club competition car. It had various suspension modifications, a "hot" 1275 with a straight cut close ratio gearbox. I bought the car on November 14, 1979. It had been painted Ford Ice Blue and was pretty Spartan.
In March of 1980, I decided that the Lenham was not fast enough. To make it quicker I repainted it Sebring Orange (A much faster colour!!) I also felt that I was missing an integral part of Spridget ownership. Being able to remove the roof. The solution to this was to cut out a section and make a Targa-style roof.
I ran the car on the road and in club competition in this format for a few years. In 1984 I decided to take it off the road to do a slight restoration.......
25 years later, and I am just starting to make a bit of progress.
As work progresses, I will add to this post.
Thanks also to Robert David for the use of his photos.
